Five lines is plenty.

What makes a helpful first message

You don’t need a formal brief to get in touch. But if you’d like a head start, these five things tell me almost everything I need for a first conversation.

  1. What your business does

In a sentence or two, as you’d explain it to a stranger at a networking event.

  2. Who you want to reach

Your ideal customer. The more specific, the better the writing.

  3. What you need written

A website, a blog series, a book, a LinkedIn profile, or “I’m not sure yet”.

  4. What it should achieve

More enquiries, more trust, more sign-ups. What would success look like?

  5. When you need it

A deadline, a launch date, or simply “sometime soon”.

An example, start to finish

We’re a family-run garden design business near Hertford.

Our clients are mostly homeowners in their 40s and 50s with bigger gardens.

We need our website rewritten, about six pages.

We want more enquiries for full redesigns, not just maintenance.

Ideally live before the spring.

Before you get in touch

Read the privacy policy for how your details are handled.

How quickly will you reply?

I read every enquiry myself and usually reply within one working day. If it’s urgent, phoning is quickest.

Can we meet in person?

If you’re in or around Hertfordshire, often yes. Otherwise a phone or video call works just as well, and that’s how most of my work with clients happens anyway.

Do you work with businesses outside Hertfordshire?

Yes. I work with businesses locally, across the UK and internationally, and I’m comfortable writing in US English as well as British.

I don’t have a proper brief. Is that a problem?

Not at all. A few lines is plenty to start with, and working out exactly what you need is part of what I do. The five points on this page are a helpful guide, but none of them is compulsory.

What happens to the details I send?

They’re used to reply to your enquiry and nothing else. You can read the full privacy policy for the details.

I’m an agency. Can I send you client work?

Please do. Several web and marketing agencies send me their clients’ websites, blogs and articles, and I’m used to working to an agency brief and deadline.

Still here?

The hardest part is the first sentence

You don’t have to get it right. That’s my job. Just tell me what you’re thinking.
